My work is to explore the relationship between people and plants with plants as the carrier. In my life, there has always been the shadow of plants, such as the garden in my childhood memory home, I will collect plants mixed with books, as well as the education of Chinese culture from childhood and so on. I started to formally create plants in 2014, mainly focusing on painting. After coming to London, I subjectively began to have a variety of media attempts. I tried to make some new breakthroughs and attempts in materials, and I began to be more interested in using collage and sculpture to express this theme. In the first unit, I made some small collages and models about the garden. In my opinion, people can't leave the city, but they need a spiritual sustenance. The garden of the city becomes the habitat of the spirit.
I will be in unit 2, I will be specific to the relationship between people and plants in the indoor environment. The relationship between human beings and family plants is a relationship of dependence and care. Plants can arouse a kind of sympathy. In terms of materials, I chose cloth collage. As described by Magdalena Abakanowicz, a Polish Artist: "fabric is our covering and our attire. Made with our hands, it is a record of our souls.". This kind of temperature is also what I like to convey to the audience. People and plants are interdependent, and plants can comfort people's hearts.

UNIT 2
My creation of unit 2 is a continuation of unit 1. In the first unit, I created some small collages and sculpture models. In the second unit, I will study these works in depth. Garden is a link between man and nature, especially in busy cities. With an increasingly concentrated urban population, many people have become more distant from nature, and private garden space is an ever more precise asset.
Therefore, I think at the beginning of the term, I want to continue my garden series. First of all, I used clay to make many sculptures of the shape of plants. They were made by my memory of plants. I don not want them to look too realistic, so I did not copy nature deliberately and shaped plants what I think it was.
After that, I painted and colored these plant sculptures. Under the influence of artist Fred Tomaselli, I put the collected figure pictures on the surface of these gypsum plants, and I also tried the materials he used in his creation to paint on the sculpture surface.
I think the garden is a utopia created by people with plants, so I use the partial pictures of the human body to hint at the artificial garden. I put the resin on these collage sculptures. On the one hand, the resin can better fix these collages, on the other hand, the texture of resin gives these sculptures a more psychedelic feeling.
In the group crits, I show my works to Daniel, he believed this work would mislead people to think of pornography means. This is the original intention of creation that I never thought of. So, I did a few changes later. Firstly, I did not know how to fix this problem. The only question that I was thinking was how to make audiences connect my theme when they saw my works. The Colour was the most important thing I need to make the change, then I used a green background behind sculptures. But it seems a little bit awkward.
Finally, I saw some works of other artists and found the works of Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao, a couple of artists. At first glance of their works, I was been attracted at once. I like the color and shape of their works very much. They seems to come from nature, but more funny and vivid than nature. I adjusted my work and began to look for colors suitable for my theme works. Also, following Geraint Suggestion, I added more material to recreate every single sculpture.
In the end, for making them like a whole, I used a glass cover to install these plant sculptures and put yellow cotton wool around them. The idea of the glass cover was inspired by visiting the garden museum , in this way, I wanted to emphasize the plants in the garden were not as same as in nature, they had a limit.
In Unit 2, I bought a basin of daffodils to put in my bedroom. In the dormitory where I live, I cannot see the traces of nature. The only natural scenery I can see is outside the window. This basin of daffodils makes me feel closer to nature. When I go back to my bedroom to face it, I feel less lonely. I recorded its growth with photos. Every day to water it to see its little growth, let me feel it is a very sense of achievement.
“Fabric is our covering and our attire. Made with our hands, it is a record of our souls.”
Magdalena Abakanowicz
I want to embody the dependence of plants and people in my works. At the same time, I wanted to do some bigger works, so I started to work on the next work, Hug. In the choice of material, I prefer to use a soft one. Because when you touch the surface, it makes you feel comfortable and safe.
This work uses sewing and collage. In this process, I was influenced by the artist Helen Barff, her works with found objects and materials such as felt, plate, concrete, rubber or photographic surfaces, using processes such as wrapping, casting or other interventions in space and surface. She is interested in how materials are shared by temporality, or how memory becomes embedded in matter. A sensitivity to touch is central to her practice. I hope the audience can touch them with their hands and feel the temperature of the plants when they see my works.
I enjoy the process of sewing very much. When I was little, I had the memory of making clothes for my own dolls. In the process, I feel that time has returned to the past, and everything has become simple and interesting again. In my opinion, sewing by myself will make the work feel warm. At the same time, I also like that my plants can make people feel warm. Although there will be camouflaged protection thorns on its surface, as long as you are willing to embrace them, you will feel the loneliness and dependence that everyone is unwilling to show.
Finally, how to show this work made me hesitate for a long time. How to make it interact with people? I have thought about all kinds of plans, including putting them on the wall or the ground, but the effect is not very good. In the end, I used the method of suspension. Because, this not only enables the audience to see the overall effect of the work, on the other hand, the audience can also interact with the work directly.
When I realized that people and plants have some interdependence, I also found a contradiction between them. Just like the movie < Little Joe >, people try to control everything, including plants. In the selection of beautiful plants as a botanical garden, but also because of their own needs wanton felling trees cause environmental damage. Nature can't speak, but it can resist silently. So, I want to create a contradictory relationship between man and plant.
In unit 1, I was influenced by artist Joana Vasconcelos. She creates sculptures, frequently on a very large scale, from familiar, domestic objects. They can be witty, colourful, engaging and provocative. I am also trying to make sculptures with soft materials, and it's very enlightening to see her works. She collages a piece of work with a variety of fabrics, And most of her works are special. In addition, her works are bright in color, giving people a bright feeling in front of their eyes. I think different clothes imply the shadow of human beings. It is human beings who create this contradictory plant.
In terms of the modeling of plants, I also drew on the creative elements of Joana Vasconcelos and imitated some forms of plants. For example, flowers and leaves of plants. In a 1-1 tutorial, Geranit looked at my work and proposed some changes. He thought some of my figures are too decorative and need to be adjusted. So I made some adjustments to some places that were too decorative.
In terms of display effect, to be more dramatic and emphasize that this plant is a naturally mutated plant, I put it beside the window and put part of it outside the window.
